Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio are working together on Amazon wildfire relief. Will and Jaden’s Smith’s company JUST Water is working with Allbirds to make sneakers from natural materials. All proceeds from the sale of the sneakers will be donated to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Amazon Forest Fund, Earth Alliance.
Brazilian sugarcane is one of the materials used in this two sneaker collection, available for both men and women. These limited edition sneakers are a partnership between the JUST Water company and Allbirds.
These companies have each made impressive environmental contributions already. Both Allbirds and JUST water have been recognized for their commitment to sustainable sourcing. Allbirds uses sugarcane, a renewable resource, in its sneaker production and JUST uses sugarcane to produce its bottle cap. Each company has the B Corporation certification, an external certification that recognizes environmental and social performance in companies.
The Earth Alliance’s Amazon Fund is committed to reducing the forest fires in the Amazon. According to their website, “The Amazon rainforest is on fire, with more than 9,000 wildfires scorching delicate, irreplaceable landscapes across Brazil this week — year to date, more than 72,000 fires have been reported by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE).”
News of the fires in the Amazon has been reported since August 2019. The Amazon rainforest is a vital part of our planet because it absorbs significant amounts of carbon. This carbon absorption could help mitigate Climate change.
