Leonardo DiCaprio is no stranger to donating or raising money for environmental causes. Two years ago, his foundation awarded $20 million to over 100 environmental organizations fighting to protect the planet. Before that, five years ago, his foundation raised $25 million for environmental causes at a charity auction in France. Last month, DiCaprio announced that he was starting an environmental organization called Earth Alliance with philanthropists Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth.

In the midst of the devastating Amazon rainforest fires, the organization is ready to jump into action. They’ve officially announced a $5 million pledge to help preserve the Amazon rainforest. According to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, “more than one-and-a-half soccer fields of Amazon rainforest are being destroyed every minute of every day.”

The $5 million fund will be dispersed between these five local organizations: Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), Instituto Raoni (Kayapo) and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).

Earth Alliance says, “Earth Alliance is committed to helping protect the natural world. We are deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis in the Amazon, which highlights the delicate balance of climate, biodiversity, and the wellbeing of indigenous peoples.” They are accepting donations for the Amazon fund, and 100 percent of the donations will go directly to protecting the Amazon.
