Installing solar panels is an appealing option for many homeowners looking to cut energy costs and reduce their environmental impact. But the decision to go solar often comes with a challenge—what happens if your roof isn’t ready for it?
This is the issue one couple faced when they considered adding solar panels to their California home. While they were eager to power their future electric vehicle with solar energy, they discovered their roof only had about ten years of life left. Contractors warned them that they might have to remove and reinstall the panels when the roof needed replacing, adding significant costs.
Roof condition is a major factor for many considering solar, according to contractor Amy Atchley. She notes that about half of the homeowners she consults need roof repairs or replacement before moving forward with solar installation. Unfortunately, while solar tax incentives can help offset the cost of panels, they don’t apply to roofing work—even if it’s done as part of a solar installation.
While lawmakers have tried to expand incentives to cover integrated roofing and solar technologies, no significant progress has been made. As a result, many homeowners are left weighing the financial and practical considerations of installing solar now or waiting for the right time.
For those ready to replace their roof, experts like Kealy Dewitt from GAF recommend considering solar shingles, which combine roofing and solar technology in one product. It’s a move that could ease the process and boost clean energy adoption, but until more incentives are available, the decision remains a tricky one for many homeowners.
