Recently, J.D. Power conducted a study that ranked U.S. states according to the quality of their tap water. This was based on six different factors: quality and reliability, price, conservation, billing and payment, communications, and customer service. The results were intriguing.
The study found that Kentucky leads the nation in tap water quality. Louisville, the state’s largest city, boasts tap water of such good quality that it was able to trademark the name “Pure Tap.” It’s reported that approximately 95% of Kentuckians have access to public drinking water.
On the other end of the spectrum, Alabama was ranked as the state with the worst tap water in the country. With an estimated 2.1 million residents depending on groundwater as their primary drinking water source, and up to 20% of these consumers relying on private water supplies like wells, individuals bear the responsibility of ensuring their drinking water’s safety. Thus, in Alabama, water testing is recommended at least once a year.
It’s crucial to note that these rankings don’t just inform us about the current state of affairs. They also point us toward areas where more attention, resources, and improvements are needed. After all, access to clean, safe drinking water is not just an environmental issue—it’s a matter of public health and social justice.
