Reefs are beautiful ecosystems that support thousands of species of animals, like dolphins, whale sharks, butterflyfish, and turtles! Unfortunately, humans are causing the decimation of many reefs by contributing to climate change, putting harmful chemicals in sunscreen, and many other actions. The Great Barrier Reef, one of the most famous reefs in the world, has undergone its third mass bleaching event in five yearsWithout reefs, we may lose diverse ecosystems and so many different species of marine animals. However, reefs are not only important for animals.

Coral reefs are shown to provide protection against storms and floods. They act as buffers against waves, storms, floods, and other similar natural disasters. Without them, many coastal communities are at risk of their property being damaged and even death.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico. The United States government’s response was far from satisfactory, as disaster relief was slow and inadequate, leaving many without access and clean water for months. Due to climate change, extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, will continue to occur more frequently. While reefs could offer important protection, pollution, climate change, and overfishing are destroying them, which is detrimental not only to the animals that call these reefs home but also to the people who rely on these reefs for protection against natural disasters. Demand that the Environmental Agency focuses more time on reef conservation. We can not let another hurricane devastate Puerto Rico or anywhere else. Sign this petition to demand action be taken to protect these coral reefs!
