Found only in Mexico City, these fascinating creatures called Axolotl are facing increasing threats from habitat loss and degradation. In fact, in 2006 the species was declared critically endangered. In 2009, experts estimated that the axolotl population had fallen 90 percent in the past four years, prompted by urbanization, says the Smithsonian.
These amphibians are only found in Lake Xochimilco, but Lake Xochimilco is suffering from eutrophication; it is so rich in nutrients from agricultural runoff that the booming plant life kills the endemic species by depriving them of oxygen, says the Smithsonian.

Like so many other species, the axolotl is threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and other human-induced impacts. They should not have to suffer as a result of our horrific treatment of the natural world. These fascinating creatures are also one of the most important animals we have for studying regeneration. Sign this petition to tell the Mexican Government, they must step up now to protect the beloved, curious axolotl before it is too late!
