natural disasters global storms with heavy winds and flooded streets, in cities around the world

Over 120 lives were lost in the recent Texas Hill Country floods — including 27 children at summer camp. Many victims never got a warning. In one chilling case, a firefighter begged to send an alert but was told to wait. Some flood alerts arrived hours too late — or not at all.

This isn’t an isolated failure. From 2017 to 2024, local officials requested flood alert funding three times. Texas said no — every time. Yet the state accepted $1.9 billion in federal disaster reduction funds. Meanwhile, families were left unprotected, and rescue efforts halted due to more rain on the way.

Climate change is only making flooding more frequent and deadly. Without early warning systems, more lives will be lost.
