Meta’s ambitions to build a new AI data center hit a significant roadblock, partly due to environmental issues involving a rare bee species, as reported by the Financial Times. According to the report, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had been negotiating an energy supply agreement with a nuclear power plant operator for the project. However, numerous obstacles, including regulatory and environmental complications, hindered progress.

At a recent Meta company meeting, Zuckerberg revealed that the rare bees near the site next to the power plant created additional regulatory concerns. Complications like these are increasingly relevant as tech companies such as Google and Amazon strike deals with nuclear facilities to secure the immense energy required for AI advancements. Even Microsoft has committed to sourcing energy from a reactor at Three Mile Island, a site infamous for America’s worst nuclear disaster.
