Italy’s iconic Marmolada glacier, nestled within the Dolomites, is projected to disappear by 2040 if current temperature trends persist. This stark warning comes from Italian scientists collaborating with environmental and Alpine protection groups, including Legambiente and the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (Cipra). Researchers have documented that the glacier is thinning at a rate of 7 to 10 centimeters daily.

Recent observations indicate a troubling acceleration in the glacier’s retreat, with a surface area equivalent to 98 football fields vanishing in just the last five years. Since measurements began in 1888, Marmolada has receded by 1,200 meters, signaling what campaign organizers call an “irreversible coma.”
The wider region of the Dolomites mirrors this environmental crisis, facing reduced snowfall in winter and unusually high summer temperatures. These conditions hasten the melting of other glaciers like Forni, one of Italy’s largest valley glaciers, which has retreated significantly over the past century.
The consequences of these changes are palpable and often devastating. For example, the catastrophic collapse of a section of the Marmolada glacier in 2022 triggered an avalanche that claimed 11 lives. As the glaciers dwindle, relics from the past resurface, including wartime artifacts and even the remains of soldiers from World War I, shedding light on the historical battles fought in these now-vulnerable heights.
Environmentalists and scientists are ringing alarm bells about the fragility of the Alpine regions, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the climate emergency. The plight of the Marmolada glacier serves as a sobering reminder of the rapid environmental changes occurring in one of Europe’s most treasured landscapes.
