In a move towards sustainable transportation, Google has integrated Amtrak train options into its search results, offering an eco-friendlier travel alternative between cities like New York and Boston. This new feature, part of a collaboration between Google and Amtrak, aims to make train travel a more visible and attractive option for travelers.

When users search for travel options between these two cities, not only will flight details appear, but now Google will also display Amtrak train schedules and fare information. This integration provides direct, up-to-date data from Amtrak, enabling users to view train departure times, trip durations, and pricing all within Google Search. Furthermore, booking a train trip is streamlined as users can transition directly to Amtrak’s website from the search results to finalize their purchase.
This integration highlights the environmental benefits of train travel. Amtrak trains, particularly on shorter routes like New York to Boston, are shown to be a “more climate-friendly” choice, as indicated by a small green leaf icon next to the train options. In many instances, train fares are also more affordable than flight options for the same routes. For example, an analysis of travel costs from October 12 to October 14 showed that most Amtrak tickets were cheaper than corresponding flights.
The environmental impact of choosing trains over planes is significant. Air travel, especially short-haul flights, has a high carbon footprint due to the energy-intensive takeoffs and landings. By contrast, trains offer a substantially lower carbon footprint, which is crucial for short distances.
Amtrak is optimistic about the future of rail travel in the U.S. and aims to double its ridership by 2040. With the U.S. rail network expanding, more Americans are considering trains as a viable travel option. The recent opening of a new rail line between Chicago and the Twin Cities, for example, saw ridership surpass Amtrak’s expectations.
By enhancing visibility and accessibility of train travel through strategic integrations like with Google, Amtrak is not only improving customer experience but also promoting environmental sustainability. As more travelers opt for trains, the potential for reducing collective carbon emissions increases significantly.
