Celebrating Sustainability and Diversity at the End of Milan Fashion Week

Milan recently showcased a week of fashion, concluding with a gala at the Teatro alla Scala that highlighted sustainability in the industry. The event featured the inaugural awards aimed at acknowledging green innovations, which were established in 2017 to spotlight brands taking significant steps to enhance their environmental impact.

In addition to these sustainability awards, the second edition of the Black Carpet Awards was held, recognizing the contributions of people of color in various sectors across Italy. British fashion designer Ib Kamara and Angolan supermodel Maria Borges presented accolades to notable figures, including shot-putter Danielle Madam and actor Alberto Malachino. Educator Cinzia Adanna Ebonine, who promotes inclusive education, and Justin Randolph Thompson, founder of Black History Month Florence, were also honored. Alice Edun made history as the founder of Italy’s first haircare brand for curly hair.

Many award winners chose to deliver their speeches in Italian, underscoring their full integration into Italian society. Adanna Ebonine emphasized the importance of recognizing young professionals of foreign origin in Italy, stating that such recognition affirms their identity beyond mere racial categorizations. Fashion mogul Anna Wintour was present to celebrate the honorees before the evening’s festivities. The awards were launched by Afro Fashion Week founder Michelle Francine Ngonmo, who expressed hopes for increased sponsorship in the future to provide monetary prizes.

On the fashion front, Ferrari’s luxury Apparel line showcased innovative designs inspired by automotive engineering. Creative director Rocco Iannone introduced supple leather pieces reminiscent of sports car interiors and denim featuring tactile pinstripes. He emphasized that craftsmanship and performance are central to their creations.
