In the town of San José del Fragua, located in southern Colombia, visitors will notice that cattle ranches, once covered by Amazonian forests, dominate the landscape. Unfortunately, according to official figures, the Caquetá region has one of Colombia’s highest rates of deforestation, with almost 15,000 acres of forest lost in 2021.

However, some local families are working to change that. The Quimbayo Gutiérrez family farm is one example of the “Amazonian Farms” program, started in 2006 by the Catholic Church under its Southern Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Florencia, which aims to conserve the Amazon and work with displaced peasants who had settled in the Amazonian foothills, cutting down forests in their attempt to survive in a new place.

For almost 17 years, the Amazonian Farms program has been transforming local methods for appropriating and using Amazonian resources, with rural families actively participating. Petronila Gutiérrez, who, together with her husband and children, runs the La Miranda farm, a 79-hectare property they have reforested and worked with sustainable agriculture and cattle-raising techniques, explains that the first thing they did when they joined the program was to let trees grow next to the stream. They understood that the most important thing was to recover the water and the forest.

The Amazonian Farms program has been successful in reforestation and in promoting sustainable farming practices. Families who participate have seen the benefits of letting the forest regrow. They are now committed to its Conservation, as it is a vital source of water, food, and resources for their livelihoods.

The Amazonian Farms program is an excellent example of how people can positively impact the environment and their community. The program’s success depends on the participation and commitment of local families, but there are many ways that individuals can also contribute to the Conservation of the Amazon.

As consumers, we can make choices that Support sustainable farming practices, such as buying from local farmers who use regenerative techniques and avoiding products that contribute to deforestation, such as palm oil. We can also Support organizations that work to protect the Amazon and its indigenous communities, such as the Amazon Conservation Association and the Rainforest Foundation US.

The Amazonian Farms program is an inspiring initiative that shows how sustainable farming practices and reforestation can contribute to the Conservation of the Amazon and the well-being of local communities. We can all play a role in supporting these efforts by making conscious choices as consumers and supporting organizations that work to protect this vital ecosystem.
