A deadly flood-water tsunami swept through Italian towns killing at least nine people, with four more people missing. The flooding happened in Italy’s central Marche region after huge storms led to severe flooding. Now, many are wondering how much Climate change had to do with extreme weather.

People have reported saving themselves by climbing onto roofs and even into trees, with some describing it as an “apocalypse,” the Guardian reported. Rainfall turned the streets into huge flooding rivers, dropping over 16 inches in just a few hours.
With an election coming up in Italy, many candidates have shifted their focus to climate change after these devastating events. While Climate change has been absent from much of the pre-election debates, now people are questioning why this is not something their leaders are talking about.
Enrico Letta, the leader of the center-left Democratic party, said that he was suspending campaigns due to the tragedy.
“How can you think that the fight against Climate change is not the first priority?” he said.
Climate change is affecting areas all around the world. The first study of Pakistan’s floods has found that Climate change had a huge impact on the extremity of the monsoon rains this season. While monsoon seasons range from year to year, this year was much more severe, and scientists say that it is because of climate change.
Even though we can’t see the global impacts of Climate change every day, it is truly a global problem. We need to work toward fighting Climate change and remember that our actions can impact people all over the world who could be paying a much higher price than we think.
