Solar electric vehicle (SEV) pioneer Aptera Motors has reopened its crowdfunding campaign shortly after halting the program in May 2024. This move invites supporters to once again play a direct role in the company’s journey toward launching low-volume production of its innovative solar vehicles.

Previously, Aptera achieved a monumental crowdfunding success, amassing $135 million from more than 19,000 backers, setting a record for the most lucrative crowdfunding effort to date. Despite this achievement, the company identified a need for an additional $60 million to kickstart its SEV production, targeted for late 2025.

Partnering with US Capital Global, Aptera initiated a $60 million convertible note offering in July. The investment round, however, struggled, securing just $700,000 by November 2024—only 1.2% of the goal. This shortfall prompted a strategic reassessment and the decision to return to crowdfunding.

Chris Anthony, co-CEO of Aptera, highlighted the shift during a tour with industry expert Sandy Munro, mentioning the high entry point of $50,000 for the convertible notes might have deterred potential small investors. The renewed crowdfunding effort lowers the barrier to entry, allowing investments starting at $1,000 per individual.

Aptera’s blog reinforces their commitment to environmental sustainability, stating, “Our vision is clear: a world where every journey is powered by the sun.” The campaign enables investors to contribute directly to a future less reliant on fossil fuels, with each $14.80 share purchased being a step towards a sustainable transportation solution.

The company continues to make headway with its production-intent vehicles as it aims to fulfill the promises made to early backers through its accelerator program. Although Aptera still needs to secure roughly $59 million to achieve its goals, the engagement from the community could once again prove pivotal. As the company progresses towards its 2025 targets, the involvement of smaller investors through crowdfunding could be a game-changer in making solar-powered transportation a reality.
