If you are thinking of giving your cat a bath, you might want to think again. There are a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t try to give your cat a bath. Not only do cats usually not need a bath, but it is also very stressful for most of them. Making it completely unnecessary and cruel to put them through it. Here are the times when you shouldn’t bathe your cat and what you should do instead.

When You Shouldn’t Bathe Your Cat

If you are thinking of giving your cat a bath, here are the top times when you shouldn’t. Read till the end of this post for the times when your cat might actually need a bath as well.

When Their Coat is Dull

Never decide to give your cat a bath just because their coat is dull. There are so many reasons for a dull coat that don’t have anything to do with grooming.

Your cat might have a deficiency or need more fat in their diet. Try switching their brand of food and give them fish oil instead.

When You Feel Like it

Some people might want to bathe their cat for fun. There are all kinds of funny videos of cats taking baths, and it might inspire you to give your furry friend a bath as well.

But you should never bathe a cat without a good reason. Especially if they are an adult that has never been bathed before. It is a scary experience that will leave you both feeling very unhappy with each other. That is cruel and inhumane.

When They are Healthy

Most healthy cats do not need to take a bath. This is obviously because, as we all know, cats are very good at cleaning themselves.

If your cat is healthy and grooms themselves, they won’t usually need any help from you to stay clean. Cays are very good at managing their own hygiene.

When They Smell

You don’t want to clean them when they smell either, at least in most cases. Cats can start to get a smell for many reasons. Maybe their litter box needs to be deep cleaned or needs to be larger. Maybe they need a better brand of food.

Cats might begin to smell if they don’t groom themselves. If this is the case, you should try to encourage them to groom their fur. If that doesn’t work you could give them a sponge bath.

If They are Shedding

You should never try to give your cat a bath just because they are shedding. Shedding might be an annoying problem to deal with but it does not require a bath.

A bath won’t be a very effective way of removing excess hair anyways. You should start a regular brushing schedule for your cat instead to help manage their shedding. This is much less stressful and much more effective.

If They Have Dandruff

You might be tempted to give your cat a bath if you notice significant amounts of dandruff, but that probably won’t fix the issue.

Cats can get dandruff because their diet is lacking something, they need more fat, or they have allergies. If none of these reasons apply to your cat, then it might be a skin condition.

When They’ve Been Outside

If your cat is allowed outside you might feel the need to give them a quick bath but try to resist. Even if they go outdoors, cats don’t need baths as dogs do. If they pick up anything in their hair, they will take care of it for themselves.

Even if they have a smell after going outside, just give it an hour or two to wear off.

Unless they have gotten into something that they can’t clean for themselves, they shouldn’t be bathed.

When Their Feet are Dirty

You might notice that your cat’s feet are looking pretty nasty. This isn’t uncommon since they go to the bathroom in a litter box.

Most litters are made up of a base of clays that can stick to their feet. They also tend to groom their feet less than they do their coat, which can lead to slightly dirty kitty paws.

If you are really worried about it, you can use a wet washcloth to gently clean off their feet. This is a much easier and less stressful way to deal with the situation.

When They are Over-Grooming

If your cat is overgrooming, you should never bathe them. This can lead to even more grooming, which can cause hair loss and skin irritation.

Cats often over-groom because of stress or allergies. Try to identify what is causing your cat to overgroom and go from there. A bath should never be something that you consider doing as that will make it worse.

When They Are Misbehaving

Never ever should you use baths as a way to punish your cats! Cats can be irritating, every cat owner knows this. They are naughty sometimes and completely stubborn and very rarely feel any regret over their actions.

But you should never concoct a punishment out of giving your cat a bath. That is the wrong way to deal with bad behavior, and other options are much more effective and kind.

When You Should Bathe Cats

Now that we have talked about the top ten reasons why you shouldn’t bathe your cat, here are some reasons why you should. These are those rare occasions when your cat really does need a bath.

  • Elderly cats often can’t groom themselves properly and can start to shrink. Because of this, they might require regular baths to stay clean and comfortable.
  • Cats that are sick have similar issues and might be too weak to groom themselves.
  • Long-haired cats can sometimes struggle to stay clean with all of their long hair. Their backside especially can become dirty and hard to manage by themselves.
  • Kittens also need baths occasionally. This can be because they spilled food on themselves or had an accident. It is common to give kittens baths as it also helps them to not be so afraid of water.
  • You should bathe your cat when they have gotten into something that they can’t clean themselves. This could be oil, paint, mud, or something like glue. Anything like this could require a bath.
