It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week!
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival Now!
The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, more commonly known as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival begins on June 21st and goes on for 10 days. It began in 2009 and since then, thousands of dogs have been slaughtered for their meat. Many of the dogs taken to be killed are pets stolen from their families, and it’s believed adrenaline makes the meat taste better so they torture the dogs before killing them. Sign this petition asking Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival!
2. Fishermen Tortured a Shark and Recorded Themselves Laughing
A disturbing video went viral of two fisherman cruelly attacking a Greenland shark and recording themselves laughing at his death. They can be seen cutting the shark’s tail with a knife after the shark’s tail got caught in their fishing line. The shark then falls into the water with blood pouring from where its tail should be. He tries to swim slowly, but is clearly struggling. The fishermen then record themselves laughing and shouting, “Good luck trying to swim, you punk!” These men should be charged with animal cruelty for what they did. If you agree, please sign this petition!
3. Cafes in Asia Keep Animals Captive As Entertainment for Customers
Cafes in Japan hold wild animals captive. The most famous of these cafes, Kitanozaka Kawauso also has Java sparrows, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, ferrets, and more. Otters are even being stolen from the wild to meet the demand of the cafes. Customers love the cuteness of the others and they pay to see the animals up close and “play” with them. Otters are aquatic animals that should be free in the water to be with their bevy. Sign this petition to ask the Japanese Ministry of the Environment to ban otter and other wild animal cafes!
4. Baby Elephant Collapsed From Exhaustion — Stop Elephant Rides Now!
Tourist attraction Nong Nooch Tropical Garden abuses elephants and forces them to give rides and perform for audiences. Recently, a tourist posted a video online in which a baby elephant is collapsing from exhaustion and the heat. The baby is tied to its mother who is carrying two tourists on her back. Apparently, many baby elephants are forced to be tied to their mothers for these rides in the scorching heat. Sign this petition asking the Thai authorities to shut down the elephant attractions at Nong Nooch and send the elephants to a sanctuary.
Fishing with gillnets and trawl nets is killing Maui and Hector’s dolphins to the point of extinction. Only 10,000 Hector’s dolphins survive and only around 50 Maui dolphins left. Less than one fifth of their habitat is protected. Sign this petition asking New Zealand to protect these dolphins!
6. Make Pet Theft a Felony!
In Vancouver, Washington, two teenage boys walk up to a home and steal the family cat who was hanging out on the porch. They were identified but claim they let the cat go in another location. The family has yet to find their dear Jack and pet theft is often not taken seriously enough. Pets are considered “property” and stealing them is not a felony. However, in Oregon, pets have “special value.” This petition asks for pets to be considered “special” in all states, not treated like objects. If you agree that pet theft should be a felony, sign this petition!
7. Follow New York’s Lead – Ban Cat Declawing Now!
When a cat is declawed, the entire tip of each toe is amputated to ensure the claw will never grow back. This can cause nerve damage, infections, lameness, hypersensitivity, and is just cruel! New York State recently passed a bill banning declawing. If you agree that all states should ban it as well, sign this petition!
8. Justice for Emu Who Was Tortured
A group of people in New South Wales, Australia recorded themselves laughing as their friend brutally tortured an emu. A man grabs the emu and drags it under a wire fence, pretends to ride the emu (who had a broken leg), and yanks his feathers out as the emu writhes in pain. Authorities claim they don’t know where the incident took place so have not taken action, but it is has indeed been confirmed that this took place in Walgett, New South Wales. Sign this petition demanding that authorities take this case of animal cruelty seriously!
9. Demand Justice for Windo, the Friendly Seal
Tourists and locals in Dartmouth, United Kingdom have named a famous seal, Windo. He loves to sunbathe on a raft that’s always there. He waves at people passing by and poses for photos. However people were outraged when a man decided to ram into Windo with his boat. He rammed into the raft and as Windo tried climbing back up, he rammed into it again. Windo, who had only been friendly with humans was very confused. Locals want Devon Police to charge the man with animal cruelty. If you agree, sign this petition!
10. Man Caught on Video Using His Dog as a Punching Bag
In broad daylight and in front of cameras, a man became angry with his dog and brutally beat him. He picked the dog up by his ears and collar and threatened the dog closely in his face. Then he throws the dog against a nearby fence and punches the poor dog in his head. Animal abusers should not have pets if they are going to abuse them this way. Sign this petition telling Dorset police to get justice for the abused dog and charge the man with animal cruelty!
