When catastrophe hits humans and the animals in their “possession” become affected, we realize why humans should not keep certain animals in captivity or use them for exploitation to begin with. During the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of this is coming to the surface. For instance, a German zoo is considering slaughtering some of their animals to feed to the others due to financial struggles, people are concerned about the temporarily retired racehorses in Australia, and pigs, chickens, and other animals in factory farming are being slaughtered at alarming rates due to the pandemic.
Now, horses on the East coast are in danger of being on the chopping block. Horses typically used for the Hampton Classic are usually raking in some money for their owners during this time of year. Trainers and stable owners usually lease out their horses for these shows.
As a top trainer and a stable-owner told Page Six, it can cost between $500 and $600 a month just to feed a horse, and $2000 a month in total to have a horse in stables on the East coast.
People being unable to care for their horses means they will likely have to sell them for cheap and that usually means they wind up being slaughtered for meat. Some stable owners are relying on donations to continue feeding the horses and avoiding this worst-case scenario.
