Snares are hunting traps set up by poachers that are simple to make but extremely difficult for animals to get out of on their own. The traps can cause immense suffering because if the animals are not freed by rescuers, they will often languish in these traps for days – hungry, thirsty, and terrified. Many animals will pull until they are exhausted, which only hurts them more.
At the beginning of April, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was informed about a baby elephant that was caught in a snare. Fortunately, his herd was still nearby, but he needed immediate rescue to ensure his survival. The team arrived and anesthetized the elephant so that they could get close enough to cut away the snare.
From the deep wound in his foot and the stomped vegetation around him, rescuers could tell that the baby elephant and his mom had worked hard in an attempt to free him. However, the snare was too strong. Fortunately, the brave team from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was there to save the day.
After the elephant recovered from anesthesia, he got up and ran to his mother – a heartwarming reunion that the rescuers go to witness.
