A month ago, an undercover investigation revealed that a Michigan-based lab was using cruel testing methods on 36 beagles. The testing included forced ingestions, device implantations, and painful surgeries. There was a strong reaction to the video, which motivated people to take action. That action paid off, as all 36 beagles were released and now potentially a law that would allow these test animals a shot a loving life. A new bill has been proposed in Michigan that would require laboratories that test on cats and dogs put the animals up for adoption before considering euthanizing them.
House Bill 4496 would also “require research facilities to submit annual reports to the department of agriculture and rural development that provide certain information regarding the release of laboratory animals,” as well as “provide immunity from civil liability under certain conditions.” It was introduced on April 24 by Representative Kevin Hertel.
After the Dow Beagles, it’s more evident than ever that a bill like this is necessary.
