In the middle of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a tiny elephant calf was found roaming the plains, trying to get to safety. Elephant herds were coming and going, crossing paths with the little one, but he kept being rejected, each time emerging from the big groups just as alone as before. Lost for what to do next, the abandoned calf did not stand a chance of surviving on his own.

Fortunately, the baby was spotted by people in the Mara, who reported the calf to the SWT/KWS Mara Vet Unit. The DSWT/Kenya Wildlife Service Mara Veterinary Unit got to the scene as soon as possible and decided the calf should be rescued. He was visibly suffering from malnutrition and needed help to survive, so he was taken under the care of the rescuers immediately.

The baby elephant got a new name, Sapalan, and soon was ready to head into the forest for the first time alongside the rest of the DSWT Nursery herd. The sweet moment was caught on camera – and it now marks the very beginning of little Sapalan’s journey back into the wild, where he belongs and where he eventually will return.
