After an intense PETA India campaign, the Madhya Pradesh Court ordered the rehabilitation of the elephant dubbed as “India’s Skinniest Elephant.”

The elephant, Lakshmi, suffers from chronic arthritis, joint deformities, and abscesses on her hips, all causing her great pain. She also has long-term side effects of a lack of food and water, showing just how skinny and frail she is.
Lakshmi was seized in December after numerous complaints were filed about how she was being kept. PETA India, took care of her, caring for her veterinarian needs until the court could decide on her fate. While under their care, Lakshmi received daily massages, pedicures, and plenty of fruit treats. As part of her treatment, PETA India also created a sandpit to put less strain on her joints, and a mud bed for her to comfortably lay on.
The court recently ordered that she be permanently rehabilitated at Wildlife SOS‘s Elephant Conservation and Care Centre.

With Wildlife SOS, Lakshmi will receive the many high-tech medical treatments available at the only Elephant Hospital Campus in India. They will give her the life and freedom that she deserves.
Chief Advocacy Officer Khushboo Gupta said, “After a life of suffering, Lakshmi will now be on her way to safety. Lakshmi has known only cruelty, misery, and neglect. Through this order, the honorable court has made clear that cruelty to elephants will not be tolerated.”
