At the Lexington Assessment and Reception Center in Oklahoma, abused and abandoned dogs are given a second chance at life through the Friends for Folks (FFF) Program. The dogs are paired with an inmate who trains them for placement with senior citizens, handicapped persons, and private individuals.
This program is incredible all around, as it’s beneficial to the inmates, dogs, and people who will reap the benefits of the trained dog’s service and companionship. FFF says, “By training the dogs, the “friend” changes the offender’s outlook on life and the way he does time. The human-animal bond develops a more caring attitude and improved self-image which translates into a more positive and caring attitude toward staff, other offenders and society as a whole.”
The way people treat other humans and the way they treat animals is very connected. People who are cruel to animals are known to be more cruel to other people as well. However, the inmates are doing the opposite. They are spending time with a dog who needs them — they come from shelters, abuse situations, or having been abandoned, and they are helping the dogs have wonderful lives.
As Todd Saunders, one of the dog trainers in the video says: “It’s amazing that even within these fences we have their unconditional love.”
Dogs don’t care what mistakes you’ve made in your past. They just love you and when given proper care, attention, and training, they will be simply grateful and happy!
