In early October an arrest was made in a horrific case of animal cruelty. A woman, her 17-year-old daughter, and the daughter’s friend (of the same age) horribly sawed off their dog’s back legs and abandoned him. Supposedly, according to the woman, Buddy was shot in February of this year but never received medical care. He suffered paralysis and was dragging his rear legs. The woman claims his rear legs then fell off from the bandages being too tight.
However, a board-certified veterinarian orthopedic surgeon concluded with certainty that Buddy’s wounds were maliciously inflicted and his legs were not removed by a professional or naturally. Horrified by this case, In Defense of Animals (IDA) began an online petition (that has since closed) and received over 12,000 signatures demanding justice for the dog.
IDA’s Justice for Animals Campaign Director Doll Stanley met with District Attorney Warren Montgomery to present the petition in Support of the prosecution of the three women. Montgomery says: “I want the thousands of people who signed a petition on behalf of Buddy to know that the petition was delivered to me personally, and your voices have been heard. I understand your outrage and appreciate the concern you have demonstrated for Buddy. As I’ve said previously, my office will not tolerate violence in any form, whether it is against a human or animal. We have taken this case seriously from the start. I’ve assigned two dedicated members of my staff to this case, and they are working very hard to investigate and prosecute it fully.”
This is good news especially since the landmark PACT law was recently passed making animal cruelty a federal crime. These women should face the full extent of the law and suffer the consequences for their cruel actions.
To ensure that this case remains a priority, sign this petition by Lady Freethinker.
As for Buddy — he survived and is recovering after all he went through. He was cared for by Dante’s Hope Animal Rescue East and is now using a wheelchair.
