In our opinion, the American Rescue Dog Show is better than the Westminster Dog Show for one important reason — it encourages pet adoption! The Westminster Dog Show aims to find the best dog per breed and focuses on purebred dogs. Most of the dogs come from breeders and the idea is that a purebred dog is the closest to perfection. But there are so many dogs in need of homes, many of which are not purebred. As the introduction to the American Rescue Dog Show says: “Who needs papers when you’re an original, one of a kind dog?”
The show’s red carpet saw celebrities like Jennie Garth, Rebecca Romijn, Melissa Peterman, Kevin Frazier, Sandra Lee, and more! Many of them were there in hopes of adopting a dog in need, but all of them were there in hopes of raising awareness for adoption.
The show had the following hilarious, adorable categories:
- Best in Belly Rubs
- Best in Couch Potato
- Best in Ears
- Best in Senior Dog
- Best in Snoring
- Best in Special Needs
- Best in Talking
- Best in Underbite
- Best in Wiggling
- Best in Wrinkles
These are exactly the kind of categories that dogs should be up for. It’s much more suitable for the cuddly, mushy love bugs that rescued dogs are.
The contenders for the categories were all dogs that have been rescued and entered into the competition by their families. There were money prizes for the winners, which can be seen on the Hallmark Channel website. For each dog who won, the rescue organization also received a shout out on the dog show and on the website, which will hopefully drive adoptions for each organization.
