In a two and half minute animation, “We Love Animals” by Smita Minda depicts a full day at a zoo, from opening to close. Throughout the video, staff and visitors make comments about the animals that, when juxtaposed with the behavior of those animals, capture the insidious cruelty of zoos. Animals pace back and forth and sulk in tiny cages, while staff members comment on characteristics such as their playfulness and speed.
At one point, a staff member tells his tour group: “This is a rhino. They are an endangered species because of poachers so we keep them safe here by bringing them to the zoo.” In addition to these comments, watching people gawk at and take videos of these despondent animals in tiny enclosures highlights how ridiculous zoos truly are.
At the end of the video, visitors head out and plan where they’ll go next. They took their selfies and got a peek at some wild animals. Now they can move with their lives, free to go where they wish, with whomever they wish. And yet, the animals are still there and still will be there for their entire lives. They will never go back to their natural habitats where they have room to run and roam free. The animals will be held captive in these tiny enclosures, where they will likely suffer zoochosis and other physical and mental health ailments, until their premature death. But hey, it’s for conservation, right? It’s to protect them, right? It’s because we love animals, right?
