Daring Escape! Shiba Inu Chews Through Kennel on Flight

Dog in kennel on flight. Open door to kennel, daring escape on plane.

A Shiba Inu’s daring escape while traveling aboard a plane is going viral on TikTok. The dog, named Sputnik, chewed through her kennel and the zip ties holding it together even though she had been sedated for the flight. A TikTok video of the Shiba Inu shows her after the plane has landed. Fresh from her escape, Sputnik can be seen standing at the threshold of the cargo hold. Text overlay on the video reads “The crew said she was just standing there like she’s waiting for the red carpet.”

Sadly, most airlines have strict rules around bringing companion animals on flights. Unfortunately, this often means that they must make their journey alone in the plane’s cargo hold. Although not ideal, this may be necessary during overseas relocation or other circumstances. However, it is important to always ensure that the hold the animal will be transported in is temperature-controlled and pressurized. Additionally, kennels must meet minimum requirements for them to be compliant with the Animal Welfare Act. Additionally, kennels should be clearly labeled as containing a live animal on all sides.

Although Sputnik’s daring escape makes for a funny TikTok video, it is important to ensure that dogs are not able to escape their kennels during a flight. In the event of turbulence or other disruptions, they could be tossed around the hold and sustain injuries. They may also run off when the hold is opened, endangering themselves and others. Fortunately, Sputnik is fine after her adventure, says her human. The video has garnered mixed reactions with some pointing out how dangerous Sputnik’s escape was. Others have attributed her escape to the Shiba Inu’s cleverness. “These dogs are too smart for their own good,” said AnnoyingBird33.
