India’s Supreme Court recently reversed its shocking order to permanently confine all stray dogs in shelters—a move that would have led to mass overcrowding and inevitable culling. While the new ruling allows healthy, sterilized, and vaccinated strays to return to their communities, a dangerous loophole remains: any dog labeled “aggressive” can still be confined indefinitely.
Without strict, science-based standards, this vague label could be misused to justify mass roundups and cruelty. Millions of community dogs in India are cared for by residents, who feed and protect them as part of daily life. They deserve compassion, not punishment under arbitrary definitions.
India must build on its humane national policy of sterilization and vaccination—not undermine it. Sign the petition now to demand the Supreme Court and government close this loophole and ensure stray dogs are protected, not persecuted.
