Our interactions with nature and animals have caused devastating consequences, highlighted by the recent pandemic. Scientists warn that the relentless destruction of wildlife habitats and the trade in wild and exotic animals bring us dangerously close to numerous unidentified viruses that could spark future pandemics. The COVID-19 crisis is a stark example, linked to wildlife and human interaction.
In response, a bipartisan group in the U.S. Congress has introduced the Preventing Future Pandemics Act, aiming to halt the import, export, and trade of live wildlife for human consumption in the U.S. This legislation is crucial as America plays a significant role in the global wildlife market, importing nearly 250 million live animals annually. The U.S. must lead by example, moving away from practices that treat animals as mere commodities and recognizing them as sentient beings deserving of respect and humane treatment.
The act also proposes allocating $300 million to bolster international efforts to prevent similar outbreaks. It’s imperative that we Support this legislation to safeguard our health and the welfare of wildlife.
