An orca, identified as T65A5, was successfully freed from entanglement in a crab pot near Saratoga Passage, Washington. The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning, July 5th, when reports of the entangled whale reached NOAA Fisheries West Coast, who promptly launched a response operation.
Upon receiving the distress call, a commercial tugboat operating in the area volunteered to monitor the whale from a safe distance until the appropriate agencies arrived. This collaboration between the tugboat crew and the responding agencies played a crucial role in ensuring the whale’s safety throughout the ordeal.
T65A5 had previously encountered a similar situation when they found themselves trapped overnight in a lagoon in Port Angeles, Washington, in May of last year. On that occasion, the whale had entered the lagoon through a canal, which it subsequently used as its escape route. This prior experience underscored the urgency of the situation and the importance of securing a swift resolution for the distressed creature.
The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a drone to gather aerial footage. Meanwhile, local tour operators affiliated with the Pacific Whale Watch Association diligently monitored the whale’s condition throughout the day. The footage captured by the drone was then reviewed by professional responders from NOAA Fisheries, the Cascadia Research Collective, and Sealife Response, who collaborated to devise a plan for freeing the orca.
However, before the intervention of these dedicated teams, the resilient T65A5 managed to liberate themself from the entanglement. Around 5 p.m. local time, the whale maneuvered closer to the shore, creating slack in the entangling lines, and successfully swam away from the fishing gear. The news was shared with relief in a Facebook post by NOAA Fisheries, which expressed gratitude to all the partners involved in the operation.
