White Gladis first captured worldwide attention in 2020 when she exhibited protective behavior towards her unborn calf and the ocean as a whole, resulting in a series of boat encounters off the Spanish and Portuguese coasts. At the time, it was not known that she was pregnant. Since the birth of her child, her destructive Conservation-focused behaviors have not been mitigated. In turn, other orcas followed suit and began ramming even more boats.
The motives of her attacks are relatively unknown. But, specialists theorize that she may have initially been responding to a traumatic event. In the past few years, three boats have capsized and 100s have been damaged from these encounters and the orcas show no signs of stopping. On June 22 of this year, three orcas attacked a boat near the Strait of Gibraltar. A few days later, two other boats were attacked.
These instances have shed light on not only the behavior of orcas but marine Conservation. White Gladis has sparked a conversation about survival, pack mentality, and animal motivation.
The tale of White Gladis serves as a reminder of the immense power of a single animal’s story to inspire positive change on a global scale. As communities around the world unite in their appreciation and protection of marine wildlife, there is hope that this newfound awareness and dedication will create a lasting legacy, ensuring that future generations can continue to marvel at the wonders of the ocean and its inhabitants.

Like Tyke the circus elephant who’d had enough abuse from humans and was shot down in cold blood, the orcas seem to be rebelling against the “image of God” species.
