Major Dogfighting Ring Dismantled in Florida

Over 100 dogs have been rescued and 23 individuals arrested after authorities dismantled a large dogfighting ring in Florida. The coordinated effort involved the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, the St. Petersburg Police Department, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Six people face charges of animal baiting, fighting, and conspiracy to gamble, while five others are charged with drug trafficking. Police Chief Anthony Holloway announced that over 111 dogs used in fights were recovered. These dogs, despite their past trauma, are friendly and are now in the care of the local ASPCA, preparing for adoption.

The investigation, dubbed Operation Pedigree, began in August 2023 to address dogfighting activities in Pinellas and nearby counties. It exposed a disturbing network of individuals engaged in this cruel bloodsport and gambling. Chief Holloway expressed gratitude to organizations like Hillsborough Animal Control and the ASPCA for their invaluable Support in caring for the rescued dogs.

During a press conference, Holloway shared before-and-after images of a dog involved in the fights, highlighting the harsh conditions and abuse these animals endured.

Operation Pedigree coincided with another investigation, “Operation Snow Cap,” led by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office targeting local drug trafficking. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri revealed the connection between the drug trade and dogfighting activities. Authorities seized 54 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of cocaine, 2 pounds of black tar heroin, 2 pounds of fentanyl, 11 pounds of marijuana, three guns, and $57,000 in cash during the raids.
