Italy’s Ministry of Health has put a leash on a popular trend, “puppy yoga,” citing concerns over animal well-being. The ban comes as a protective measure, with the ministry emphasizing that only adult dogs should partake in such activities to ensure both animal health and human safety.
Puppy yoga, a trend where playful pups roam freely around yoga classes or even become part of the poses, has been gaining traction for its purported benefits to well-being. However, the ministry’s note highlights a significant concern: the often-overlooked stress placed on young dogs during these sessions.
According to dog expert Giusy D’Angelo, the experience can be mentally and physically taxing for the animals, leading to potential long-term repercussions. Moreover, attendees may inadvertently make hasty decisions, such as adopting a puppy on an impulse. Transportation and hydration issues further compound the problem, with D’Angelo noting that the puppies used in these classes are sometimes not adequately cared for.
Italy’s stance echoes similar sentiments expressed by the UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), which has cautioned against puppy yoga due to its potential negative impact on animal welfare.
