(Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”)
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is the latest installment from writer/director James Gunn, and it stands out as perhaps the most pro-Animal rights movie in recent memory. The film goes to great lengths to emphasize the importance of treating animals ethically, making it an essential watch for those concerned with animal welfare.
In the first “Guardians of the Galaxy,” one of the most heart-wrenching moments is when Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and the rest of the gang see Rocket (performed by Sean Gunn and voiced by Bradley Cooper) scarred from medical experimentation. This touching moment sets the stage for a deeper exploration of Rocket’s backstory in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
The third film begins with a flashback to a young Rocket, then an ordinary raccoon, taken from his cage by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), a villain seeking to create a genetically modified utopia. The High Evolutionary performs horrifying experiments on Rocket and other animals, including a rabbit named Floor, an otter named Lylla, and a walrus named Teefs. These scenes are difficult to watch, particularly for animal lovers, as they depict the cruelty and suffering endured by these innocent creatures.
Rocket’s struggle continues in the present as he fights for his life against the new villain, Adam Warlock (Will Poulter). Knowing what he has already endured, the sight of Rocket on a hospital bed is emotionally distressing. However, Rocket eventually recovers and, during the final battle against the High Evolutionary, insists on saving all creatures in the villain’s headquarters, including the Abilisks from “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
The film’s conclusion reinforces its commitment to the theme of animal rights. Gunn shared on Instagram that the movie is about “joy and compassion and learning to see beyond the rim of our own worlds and having empathy for all living things.” He also expressed that Rocket’s journey mirrors his own, as they both learn a better way of living.
Though “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” delves into some dark and bleak moments, it’s necessary to understand the pain and suffering of the characters fully. The story’s emotional weight makes the film’s conclusion even more powerful, leaving viewers with a profound message about the importance of empathy and compassion for all living beings.
