Lugnut Has Been Waiting 730 Days to Be Adopted

Happy-looking dog

Lugnut has been waiting for over 730 days for someone to give him a loving forever home. Rescued from a hoarding situation and brought to the Escambia County Animal Shelter, Lugnut is one of 112 dogs waiting for adoption. The pooch, who is thought to be an American Bulldog mix, has been overlooked for over two years. During this time, shelter staff members have gotten to know Lugnut pretty well. They say that he is a loving dog who does well with all people, including children. However, he will need to meet other dogs before going home with them and prefers a home without cats.

Until July 31st, the Escambia County Animal Shelter is participating in the nationwide Empty the Shelters Campaign. Hopefully, this event will encourage community members to consider adopting

Unfortunately, many of the dogs and cats who enter shelters each year face protracted stays as they wait for their forever homes. Each year, roughly 6.3 million companion animals enter shelters. Of these, only 4.1 million are adopted, according to the ASPCA. The shelter environment can be extremely stressful for dogs and cats. This can keep them from putting their best paw forward when it comes to finding a family. Senior animals have an especially difficult time finding new homes.

Another factor that contributes to some animals’ extended shelter stays is their breed. A study released in 2016 shows that dogs labeled as “pit bulls” may spend three times longer in shelters than other breeds. Bully-breed dogs, like Lugnut, frequently face a stigma that keeps them from being adopted and makes it more difficult for owners to move with them. Because of unfair stereotypes around pit bulls and similar breeds, many places have breed bans that prohibit these dogs.

Sadly, in recent years, shelters have seen increased rates of animal surrender. Many are now experiencing severe overcrowding. Increasing cost of living, and high housing costs are contributing to high levels of pet surrender. As more animals end up in shelters, the chances of them being overlooked increase. Additionally, always remember to talk to shelter staff when adopting an animal. They may be able to offer insight as to which animal is best suited to your family and lifestyle.
