A touching Instagram clip shared by Millie’s human captures the dog’s initial panic following her rescue from a puppy mill. The video features a text overlay stating, “The day Millie was rescued from the puppy mill, she had a panic attack in our car. It took 45 minutes to get her out.” The human expressed in the caption, “She was so scared.”
Before her rescue in late May, Millie had spent her entire life in a puppy mill, primarily being used for breeding.
“Millie had never been in a car before and was completely overwhelmed. She was panting, drooling, trembling, and wouldn’t make eye contact—classic signs of a panic attack. I sat with her on the car floor, speaking softly until she could calm down,” her human shared.
Puppy mills are notorious for prioritizing profit over the welfare of dogs, with an estimated 10,000 such facilities operating in the United States. These breeding operations often provide inadequate living conditions and minimal veterinary care.
Before Millie’s rescue by Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue, she had recently given birth to a litter of puppies. Since she was no longer deemed profitable, her future was uncertain. Millie’s human also took the opportunity to offer insights for other dog parents dealing with pets that may suffer from panic attacks based on her experiences in helping Millie adjust to her new life.
