Dog in New York Shelter Gains Internet Support in Search for Her Forever Home

After more than a year at the Hempstead Animal Shelter in New York, Melia, a nervous black dog, is finally getting some much-needed attention online. Melia’s story has captured thousands on social media as animal lovers rally to find her a permanent home after she has spent over 413 days in the shelter.

Lu, a shelter volunteer for five years, has taken up Melia’s cause, even renaming their Instagram account to @adopt_melia_and_friends. Lu’s posts, including one that quickly gathered over 21,000 likes, highlight the challenge of finding a home for “invisible” dogs like Melia. Describing her as a “sweet but nervous dog,” Lu shares Melia’s journey from being left alone in an apartment to experiencing multiple shelter returns due to evictions and an unsuccessful foster placement.

According to shelter director Ashley Behrens, Melia’s past has left her wary of new environments, but once she warms up to people, her affectionate side shines through. Despite her nervousness, shelter workers have seen her make “mini milestones,” especially when outdoors, where she enjoys running and playing. Behrens believes Melia would thrive in a calm, adult-only home with someone experienced in caring for anxious dogs.
