Pet adoptions from U.S. shelters and rescues have seen a significant decline in 2024, according to midyear data from Shelter Animals Count. This year, 82,000 fewer dogs and cats found homes compared to the same period last year, marking a 4% drop. Despite the decrease in adoptions, there’s a silver lining: shelters and rescues reported nearly 5% fewer animal intakes in 2024 compared to 2023. However, this reduction has not significantly eased the burden on shelters. Animals are staying longer in shelters, and overall populations continue to rise.
In the first half of 2024, 322,000 more animals entered the system than were adopted or otherwise left the shelters. Shelter Animals Count suggests supported self-rehoming as a solution to keep pets out of shelters. This approach allows pet parents to rehome their pets directly without involving shelters. From January to June 2024, approximately 20% of these potential surrenders resulted in adoptions and nearly 10% of pet parents chose to keep their pets after considering rehoming options.
The report provides a breakdown of the dogs currently in shelters: 48% are adults, 25% are young adults, 17% are puppies, and 10% are seniors. Medium-sized dogs, weighing between 26 and 60 pounds, make up nearly half of the shelter population. Large dogs (61 to 100 pounds) account for almost 30%, small dogs (under 25 pounds) constitute 17%, and extra-large dogs (over 101 pounds) represent about 2%. Stray animals continue to be a major issue, with 56% of both cats and dogs in shelters being strays, while 32% were surrendered by their humans.
