This gangly little elephant calf is just learning the ropes. Clearly the baby of the family, he sticks close to his herd, wrestling with an older elephant youth and shaking his trunk around awkwardly, with no apparent clue what it’s used for. He sure has a lot of personality! All baby elephants are pretty cute, but this one is really something special.
When a tourist couple from the nearby Mfuwe Lodge giggles at the calf’s clumsiness, he overhears them and defends his honor, charging and bucking defiantly (and adorably). But baby elephants feel safest and most comfortable with their families, so it doesn’t take long for this one to run back to his herd.
This tight-knit elephant family lives with many more of their kind in South Luangwa National Park in Zimbabwe, where they are free to roam over a wide stretch of land, bathe in the river, and live a natural lifestyle.
