Colorado Engineers Develop AI-Powered Roadkill Detection to Prevent Accidents

A team of four computer science engineers in Colorado is working to address the state’s rising problem of wildlife-related car crashes. Known for its mountainous terrain, forests, and popular ski resorts, Colorado sees a significant number of accidents caused by animals crossing busy roads. These engineers are hoping to reduce these incidents with their innovative device, designed to detect animals like deer and provide drivers with advance warnings.

The device, part of a project called “Project Deer,” uses cutting-edge technology to alert drivers when animals are on the road. Unlike traditional vehicle systems that rely solely on cameras, Project Deer incorporates artificial intelligence to analyze thermal images of wildlife. This advanced recognition system aims to more accurately identify animals in a vehicle’s path, giving drivers the time they need to react and avoid collisions.

Wildlife-related car crashes are a major issue in Colorado. The Colorado Department of Transportation estimates that nearly 4,000 accidents involving animals occur each year, leading to an annual $80 million in property damage. If successful, Project Deer could drastically reduce these numbers by preventing crashes before they happen. The system is specifically designed for Colorado’s unique landscape, where roads cut through dense forests, and wildlife is abundant.

By 2029, automakers and suppliers are expected to mandate animal detection and automatic braking in new cars, but Project Deer offers a more accessible solution in the meantime. The engineers behind the project estimate that their device could cost between $1,000 and $2,000 as a third-party option. While not inexpensive, it would still be a more affordable alternative to purchasing luxury vehicles that typically feature advanced detection technology.
