Cincinnati Animal CARE is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person caught on camera throwing a dog over a fence into their facility’s play yard. The disturbing incident occurred around 6 p.m. on October 16, and the shelter is now trying to track down the person responsible.
The footage shows a car pulling up along the road near the shelter, and soon after, an individual is seen walking on the sidewalk with a dog. Shockingly, the person hurls the dog over a 6-foot fence into the shelter’s yard. The dog, though visibly shaken, was able to stand up after hitting the ground.
Meaghan Colville, a representative from Cincinnati Animal CARE, expressed her frustration over the incident. “We were open. We had staff that was there that could have helped and could have assisted,” she said, pointing out that the dog could have been safely surrendered.
Fortunately, the shelter staff quickly responded after finding the dog in the yard. “Upon finding the dog in the yard, Cincy CARE staff rushed into action to assist the animal, who could be seen limping after the horrific act,” the shelter explained. The dog was given immediate attention, including vaccination and an evaluation for injuries. While the dog appeared to be limping, further assessments were made in a holding kennel to ensure she was okay.
The vehicle in the video is believed to be a black Honda Accord, and shelter staff are hoping that someone may recognize it. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time dogs have been abandoned at the shelter. According to Colville, it’s all too common for people to leave dogs in the parking lot without talking to staff. “Sometimes they’re just loose in our parking lot. It’s not unusual to find animals that have been left without talking to staff. What is unusual is for it to happen in broad daylight when we have staff right there,” she explained.
For those who are unable to keep their pets, Cincinnati Animal CARE offers options to ensure safe surrender. The shelter has 24/7 dog wardens available to help people make arrangements to have their pets picked up.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Hamilton County Dog Wardens via email at B.Ward@cincycare.org.
