A tragic incident at Edinburgh Zoo has reignited concerns about the impact of fireworks on animal welfare. Roxie, a three-month-old red panda, died after choking on her vomit, likely triggered by the stress caused by loud fireworks during the UK’s Bonfire Night celebrations. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which operates the zoo, shared that Roxie had been making progress under specialist care following the recent death of her mother, Ginger.
Despite having access to a quiet den, the loud and frightening noises appeared to overwhelm the young panda. RZSS deputy chief executive Ben Supple noted that the zoo could not rule out fireworks as a factor in Ginger’s death just days earlier. “We know that fireworks can cause stress to other animals in the zoo,” Supple stated, underscoring the dangers these displays pose to wildlife.
Red pandas, listed as endangered due to habitat loss and declining numbers in the wild, face additional challenges in captivity from external stressors like fireworks. Advocating for change, RZSS has joined other organizations in calling for stricter fireworks regulations. A petition urging the UK government to ban the public sale of fireworks has already garnered over 1 million signatures. The zoo supports proposals to allow fireworks only at organized events with quieter alternatives to minimize harm to animals.
This incident mirrors past tragedies, such as the death of a baby zebra at Bristol Zoo in 2020, also attributed to firework-induced stress. Animal welfare groups like the RSPCA have received thousands of reports documenting animals’ fear responses to fireworks, emphasizing the need for reform.
