Animal rights groups in Norway are urging authorities to investigate the death of Hvaldimir, a beluga whale that gained fame in 2019 after being suspected of being trained as a Russian spy. The whale was found dead on Norway’s southwestern coast, with multiple gunshot wounds.
Hvaldimir first appeared off Norway’s coast in a harness marked “Equipment St. Petersburg,” sparking theories of Russian military involvement. Organizations like Noah and One Whale, dedicated to tracking the whale, have filed a complaint with Norwegian police to initiate a criminal investigation. The cause of death is under scrutiny, with an autopsy report expected within three weeks.
The beluga, estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old, was relatively young and had become a beloved figure in Norway. His mysterious death has raised concerns, with One Whale’s head, Regina Crosby Haug, calling the injuries alarming. Norwegian police are now under pressure to investigate possible criminal activity.
