Environmental advocates have called for an investigation into former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. following allegations that he sawed off a whale’s head in 2012. The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund has requested that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) examine whether Kennedy violated the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act by allegedly removing the head of a deceased whale.

According to reports, Kennedy, upon discovering a dead whale on Squaw Island in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, purportedly used a chainsaw to detach their head and transported them to Mount Kisco, New York, on the roof of his family minivan. The incident resurfaced following a 2012 interview with his daughter, who described the journey as extremely foul-smelling, causing distress among other highway travelers.
This request for investigation by the environmental group is part of a broader scrutiny of Kennedy’s actions concerning wildlife and protected species. The group emphasized that unauthorized collection or possession of parts from endangered species can hinder scientific research and Conservation efforts, particularly with marine mammals that are seldom observed in their natural habitats.
The legal implications of Kennedy’s actions could be severe. Transporting a whale skull across state lines may constitute a violation of the Lacey Act, a cornerstone U.S. Conservation law. The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund noted that such activities could potentially disrupt vital scientific studies necessary for the Conservation of marine species.
This incident is not the first controversy involving Kennedy, who recently faced multiple allegations unrelated to wildlife, including past political endorsements and personal conduct issues. The unfolding situation underscores the complexities of wildlife protection laws and the consequences of their potential violation.
Representatives for Kennedy and NOAA have yet to respond to these allegations. The environmental group has expressed its commitment to ensuring compliance with wildlife protection statutes, highlighting the importance of preserving these natural resources for future scientific and conservation endeavors.
