Plastic has only been mass-produced for a few decades, but it’s alarming to witness the devastating impact it’s had on one of the ocean’s most beloved inhabitants: sea turtles. Research indicates that a staggering 52% of the world’s sea turtles have fallen prey to plastic waste, a perilous result of a throwaway culture that threatens the very existence of these ancient and graceful creatures. The reasons behind this tragic trend are surprisingly simple yet heartbreaking: a drifting plastic bag can masquerade as a delectable meal for sea turtles, resembling jellyfish, algae, or other vital components of their diets.
Yet, the perils of plastic for sea turtles extend beyond ingestion. Discarded fishing nets, known as “ghost nets,” can entangle these creatures, leading to their tragic demise by drowning or rendering them powerless to escape predators or seek nourishment. What’s more, the accumulation of plastic waste on crucial nesting beaches only compounds the crisis, placing baby turtles at significant risk of entanglement.
Survivors of this plastic plague face an equally bleak future, as the unnatural buoyancy caused by ingesting plastic can stunt their growth and impede reproduction rates. In a world where our oceans are teeming with plastic, these remarkable sea turtles find themselves caught in a relentless and unforgiving cycle of harm. Yet, amid this bleak narrative, there are stories of hope and inspiration.
