Earlier in July, a tweet by Reina Sultan went viral. In the tweet, Reina said “ok this made me lol but has anyone with POTS/hEDS noticed that going in the ocean makes them feel wildly better? like i get 2-3 days of feeling like i am not chronically ill when i swim in the ocean and idk if its the salt or the pressure or what but even my joints feel better”. In response, many others shared that they experienced similar reactions after taking a dip in the ocean or relaxing on the shore.

In response to the tweet, doctors have shared that there is a growing body of scientific evidence showing that these feelings are based on fact. The use of salt water for healing can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and is known as thalassotherapy. Skin conditions and inflammatory diseases may see results from thalassotherapy according to a scientific review published in 2021. Trace elements including potassium, magnesium, and calcium may be absorbed through the skin when swimming or near the ocean.
Additionally, being near the ocean can improve mental health and reduce stress. Called the “blue space effect”, a 2021 study revealed that spending time near bodies of water led to improved mental well-being.
To maximize the healing effects of the ocean, research suggests that engaging in activity could be the most beneficial. Whether that is taking a walk, swimming, or surfing, this combines the healing effects of the ocean with the benefits of exercise. Additionally, exercises performed in the water may have a lower impact which places less stress on the joints.
Sadly, the world’s oceans are under serious threat. Record high ocean temperatures, pollution, and more are contributing to the loss of biodiversity and the collapse of important currents in the world’s oceans. Sign this petition to Help Protect the Ocean!
