Sometimes, it’s hard to fall asleep. Lots of thoughts rushing through your head, dreaming of home, worrying about the future, the list goes on and on. Well, these two orphaned Asian elephants feel your pain. Rupa and Aashi lost their mothers soon after birth, and without the love and affection so essential for development, these babies just couldn’t fall asleep at the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) rescue center in north-eastern India.

Rupa was orphaned when she fell into a deep ravine in Kaziranga National Park, and couldn’t be rescued by her mother. Aashi was found in a trench in an Assam tea garden, separated from the herd. When Aashi was eventually reunited with her herd, she was rejected. Luckily, she was taken to the rescue center, too.

Dr. Panjit Basumatary, a vet for IFAW said, “With the small elephants, it is important to control their body temperature. I noticed in the mornings they could be cold from staying in the concrete nursery after being out in the sun during the day.”

These custom-made jammies are just what these elephants needed to fall asleep.

Though other workers were skeptical at first, they have now witnessed major improvement from these dressed up ellies

Rupa is slowly recovering from a dislocated leg and deep wounds. Aashi was severely dehydrated and stressed after her separation from her herd, and is now on the road to recovery! Once they’re weaned off bottle-fed formula milk, they’ll be released into the wild in two years time.

We’re so glad Dr. Basumatary came up with a plan to help Rupa and Aashi get a good night’s sleep. To support IFAW’s work to rescue and protect elephants like Rupa and Aashi, visit their website.

poor babies!!! I will never understand this constant need to consume everything around us without considering the damage we inflict on others with our greed, because I can only imagine how these little ones lost their moms and first thing that comes to mind is human influence of some horrible and greedy sort!!! When will it end? I can only imagine how traumatized these babies are and don't want to think how they lost their moms. However, it is somewhat relieving to see that there are still some good people out there that give a shit and work hard to help anybody in need, specially the ones who have no voice to defend themselves, to the rescuers!!! Thank you for caring, thank you for being the change we want to see in this world and for inspiring the rest of us to become the same!!! If only the rest of the world thought this way, with compassion and consideration, this world would be entirely different and better!!! THANK YOU!!!
