We all know cows are more often than not born as victims of the meat and dairy industries, but there is another way cows are abused and exploited by humans that is not talked about as much — bullfighting. And now there is even more reason why bullfighting must end, as a matador in northern Spain, who had already lost one eye from being gored by a bull in a 2011 event, was SCALPED by the very bull he was taunting!
The barbaric “sport” involves costumed figures taunting and antagonizing an already-abused and agitated bull in front of a roaring crowd, only to end the spectacle with the bloody murder of the bull. While antagonizing the bull to make him upset and charge for the amusement of cheering crowds, “banderillas,” large wooden sticks with sharp blades at one end, are placed on the shoulder muscles of the bull and pierce his skin, making him react instinctually to defend his life. In the video of the matador being scalped, we see the bull with banderillas on his bloody shoulders, and it appears the bullfighter is attempting to put even more on him. You can watch the video of the incident here, but we warn you, it may be a little graphic for some viewers.
It goes without saying that this incident was 100 percent avoidable. And it should also be noted that the bull was simply doing what he was being pushed to do by the matador in the name of entertainment — charge. Although the event was gruesome, the matador, 45-year-old Juan Jose Padilla, appears to be recovering fine and seems to perhaps wear the injury with pride. If this disturbing occurrence is not enough to change the minds of fans of the sport, then what will?
By sharing the truth about bullfighting and changing the misconception that the practice is valorous and entertaining, you can help put an end to this vile “sport” once and for all. Start by sharing this eye-opening story with your network as a reminder that bullfighting is dangerous for both the animals and humans involved.
