Mercy For Animals Targets Walmart Pork Production

On the campaign website, MFA refer to undercover footage taken inside two of the largest pig farms, one owned by Seaboard Foods, and the other by Prestage Farms. The footage shows piglets having their testicles ripped out and their tails cut off, all without painkillers.

Following discussions with MFA, Costco Wholesale, Kmart, Oscar Mayer and CKE announced that they would be eliminating gestation crates from their pork supply chains. The goal is be 100 per cent crate-free by 2022. MFA announced their hopes on their blog that these recent announcements will encourage other manufacturers “including Walmart, Domino’s, Cheesecake Factory, Starbucks, Nestlé, Tyson, General Mills, and countless others, to make similar commitments.”

But will the protests targeted specifically at Walmart give out the wrong message? Will people be aware of that Walmart is one of the largest, but not the only, culprit? And how can we be certain that the alternative will be an improvement? Let us know your opinions in the comments.
