We love it when stars use their voice to speak up for those who can’t and wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, Torrey Smith and his wife, Chanel did just that. The compassionate couple paid the adoption fees for 46 dogs and cats looking for homes at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter’s (BARC) annual Pawject Runway fundraiser.

The former Baltimore Ravens star took to the stage at the fundraiser and remarked that while everyone was there to enjoy themselves, he didn’t want the stars of the show to go unnoticed: the animals. Torrey said the important part was to raise money and awareness for the homeless and abused animals of Baltimore.

Torrey revealed that before the Pawject Runway Fundraiser for BARCS, he and his wife were discussing what more they could do for the city’s animals in need – and to ensure that every single animal had an application in by the end of the fundraiser, the couple decided to pay ALL of the adoption fees for the dogs and cats!

BARCS was in awe of the Smith family going above and beyond for homeless animals writing on their Facebook page, “Thank you, Torrey and Chanel, for always looking out for Baltimore’s homeless dogs and cats and having such a big heart for our city.” Big hearts, indeed! And the Smith family isn’t the only one with a big heart. Baltimore Ravens player Ronnie Stanley adopted a second pup from BARC, an adorable Pit Bull mix after falling in love with her at the Pawject Runway Fundraiser. Amazing!

With six to eight million animals enter U.S. shelters, but only three to four million get adopted every year. Knowing this, we are even more inspired by Torrey and Chanel’s generous donation to help end pet homelessness.

You don’t need to be a football star to help needy shelter animals! You too can make a difference in the lives of homeless animals simply by volunteering. Organizations rely heavily on volunteers to assist with animal care and day-to-day operations. There’s never a shortage of things to do and opportunities are available for people of every skill set. You can help take dogs for walks, give them food and water, and make sure their area is clean. If your preference is helping out behind the scenes, you can volunteer your services by assisting with fundraisers, outreach events or general office tasks. And please, always adopt and never shop!

  1. I know that it was good will on his part. But i wish he would maybe donate just half of the amount per animal.
Adoption fee were in place to make sure potential adopters were serious about it.
If it was free for all, of course everyone would try to get one.
