Happy New Year! Have you set your New Year’s resolutions yet, Green Monsters? News out of Australia might inspire you to push yourself a little harder this year when you read about what one couple accomplished this past year.

Janette Murray-Wakelin, 64, and Alan Murray, 68, both ran 366 consecutive marathons in a row, while on a raw vegan diet! There are just too many factors that make this accomplishment beyond impressive.

The couple ran a marathon every day for a year to raise money for charity. In total, they ran 9,776.75 miles, finishing their last marathon on New Year’s Day to their home in Melbourne. This final run on New Year’s Day broke a world record set by Stefaan Engles, a Belgian, who ran 365 marathons in a year back in 2011.

According to the couple’s Facebook page, they pursued this tremendous achievement to “inspire and motivate conscious lifestyle choices, to promote kindness and compassion for all living beings and to raise environmental awareness for sustainable future.”

I’m sure once people pick their jaws up off the floor after hearing about this amazing accomplishment they may definitely be inspired to live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, or at least consider making a few tweaks. They may also be reminded that a plant-based diet can be a great addition to an any athlete’s lifestyle, contrary to popular belief that it does not provide enough protein for an active body.

According to the Calgary Herald, the couple’s daily diet consisted of 10 bananas, a grapefruit, and a date smoothie for breakfast at 4 a.m. Followed by a snack of 10 bananas at 8 a.m., a green smoothie at 9 a.m. and at the 19-mile mark a fruit salad, followed by oranges at the 23-mile mark. After finishing the marathon around 4 p.m., they would end the day with an avocado, vegetable juice and salad for dinner.

When asked by ABC Radio how they handled the consecutive runs, Alan Murray said, “The first few weeks we were sore, breaking ourselves in. After that, it actually became easier every day.”

This is just amazing considering some people, at the prime of their athletic lives wouldn’t consider marathons to get easier year after year, never mind day after day.

The couple certainly ate a lot of bananas during their runs but they maintained a completely raw, vegan diet from start to finish. Alan and Janette are living proof that athletes can perform well and still maintain a plant-based lifestyle, just like these 10 amazing vegan athletes.

So why not let Alan and Janette inspire you in your New Year’s resolutions to try a plant-based diet, even if it’s just one day a week on Meatless Monday? Who knows, maybe you’ll start running marathons by next year!
